cew-winner I am mega late on this this year, but I didn’t want too much more time to go by without talking about the 2008 CEW Beauty Awards winners.  These are chosen by executives in the beauty business - editors, owners and every other type of professional you can think of in the biz.  You can be guaranteed that these products are going to be the tops in their categories - and definitely worth a try.  Mass means you can buy the products (mass market) in the drugstores, prestige means that they are available at specialty/department stores and well, they cost more.  Prestigious, you know.

Happy May Day!  We have two big things going on this month - first, and most important to your health - it is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.  Second, and also relatively important to your health, is Mother’s Day.  Yeah!  I will get into a lot more about Skin Cancer Awareness later on, but I have Mothers Day on my mind at the moment.  Sadly, I usually ask for tech stuff for Mother’s Day (and will likely do the same this year, along with a “day off”  - yeah right), but I really have this on the brain, hardcore:

gardenia-kiehls This is Kiehl’s Gardenia collection - a limited time only collection.  Why *oh why* did I not get this when I was at Kiehl’s last month?  Probably because it wasn’t there yet.  Gardenia is, bar none, my very favorite fragrance.  My gardenia bush outside is covered in buds, and I salivate every time I look at it.  I can hardly wait for the flowers to open - the smell is simply to-die-for.  Ok ok, back to the products.

There are three new products in Kiehl’s line, Gardenia Hand & Body Lotion ($19.50), Gardenia Liquid Body Cleanser ($15.50) and Gardenia candle (I am *so* getting this - $28).  I really don’t have to say more about this - it is Kiehl’s, and a great product (can you say, 1851??), with an amazing scent.  What else do you need?   Ah, gift wrap.  If you are lucky enough to be near a Kiehl’s store, they will help you with that too.  I have seen the operation, it is lovely, organized and they will take GOOD care of you back there in the gift department.  Let me know if you get this - I am dying to know how great it smells.  Meanwhile, I’m ordering a candle (or 5) - don’t forget this is limited edition and will likely sell out before long.   I can buy myself Mother’s Day gifts, right?  :)

xen-tan-transform Not to say I won’t find another one this year that I like better, but for me, hands down, Xen-Tan is the best self tanner (non airbrush)- this is my 2nd year running with it.  I use GlowFusion gun and solution sometimes, the gun is great but the solution is subtle - if I need a tan now, Xen-Tan is the one.  I have tried two new ones this year, so far - I am hoping to find the perfect spray on tan, but alas, I am still in favor of the lotion:

Lancome’s Flash Bronzer - I LOVE the spray - it gives great, non streaky coverage and is super long lasting, but, unfortunately is WAY too warm in color for my skin.  Very unnatural color - for me.

ModelCo Tan Airbrush In a Can - Just didn’t work for me at all.  The color is good, but the spray is a little too strong, which is wasteful, messy and it really leaves me blotchy and streaky.  The tan fades quickly and unevenly, and I could never make it look even a little close to normal.

So back to Xen-tan - they have some new products out this year that look really nice, most especially their new Transform.   This is a subtle product that you use as a daily moisturizer without the fuss of application, as it is a time released, very gradual tan builder.  Very nice if you don’t need a tan NOW.   My usual purchase is the Dark Lotion - it is really perfect.  Not orange-y at all, does not stain your hands or streak, and it doesn’t have a bad smell or leave a sticky feeling on your skin.  I think that this, along with the daily use of Transform, might be a really perfect way to keep up my tanning up this year.

As a reminder, here are some tips for applying self tanners from my archives - I know I have more in there, but this one is pretty general, but thorough - I hope you enjoy it!  And if you need a reminder as to why baking in the sun is not the answer, read about my lovely skin cancer experience

A Renewed Love for Kiehl’s

Written by on Monday, April 14th, 2008 in Beauty, Body Care, Hair Care, NYC, Skin Care, glam, kiehls.

kielhs-tilework I haven’t talked about it much, as I really (really!) don’t like to rant too much around here, but Kiehl’s hasn’t been on my favorite list for a long time due only to a bad customer service/web site user problem I had 2 Christmases ago.  I just sort of wrote them off after that, despite my bestest girlfriend being a huge fan and constantly talking them up.

So when in NYC with Glam last week, our first stop of the day was at the Kiehl’s flagship store in the East Village.  Wow, what an experience that was.  First of all, the history.  We were treated to a video about the history of Kiehl’s - that store has been in the same spot since 1851, its beginnings were as an apothecary, and that has led to what Kiehl’s is now - a wonderful source of effective hair, skin and body products.  1851 - that, my friends, is a mighty long time.  You don’t last that long without a wonderful product and a commitment to serving your customers.  That, to me, is reason enough to give Kiehl’s a try.

We watched the video, then were given a tour of the (huge!) store and the opportunity to ask any questions on our mind.  So I left Kiehl’s with a few goodies, and a whole pile of samples.  I haven’t yet gotten into some of the things I bought, but here they all are:

kiehls-products

Abyssine Cream SPF 23 - An anti-aging cream containing alga and antioxidants and a broad spectrum UVA/UVB inhibitor.  Yeah. This is a rich feeling, non greasy cream that leaves your face immediately feeling soft - I love this.

Ultra Facial Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 - I adore this product too (so does Lianne).  This is a great solution to a quick outing, or if you want to just smooth things out a little bit but don’t need to put your full face on.  SPF 15 too - sooooo important!  This just takes the teeniest amount - this 2.5 oz bottle is going to last me a really, really long time.

Read more about my trip and Kiehl’s after the jump…

All images copyright 2008 Christina Jones

Olive Fruit Oil Deeply Repairative Hair Pak - I have not gotten into this one yet, but will for sure this week.  This came highly recommended by Teri, so I thought I had best listen.   This is what the jar says:  Formulated for dehydrated, under-nourished, and damaged hair, our repairative masque provides intense conditioning helping to repair severely weakened hair fibers by restoring its moisture content.  Natural Recipe with Avocado Oil and Lemon Extract.  What I can tell you is that it feels great rubbed onto my arm, and Im going to get masqueing tonight or tomorrow morning with my next shower.

Over-Night Biological Peel - I have used a lot of peels.  A lot.  Most of them are somewhat helpful, but this one seems a little different - you put this one on and leave it on all night, for starters.  Ill get on this one as soon as I am done with my microdermabrasion 6 week routine.  I have high hopes for this product!!

Last but not least is the Coriander Deluxe Hand & Body Lotion - which I was ordered by my bestest friend (see above) to bring home for her.  I haven’t opened it yet, as it is hers - but since I bought it, I might (heh).  I suspect it smells divine, and I know, from mucho testing of lotions in the Kiehl’s store that day, that it is a fantastic moisturizing product.  Suz, you better hurry on down here and get it, or I might just use the whole thing. ;)

Stay tuned for a more indepth review of a few of these items - I’m looking very forward to working them into my routine!  And here are a few more photos I took in the store - it was really a beautiful, beautiful place.  Thanks to all the folks at Kiehl’s for inviting us in and giving us the deluxe tour!

You might know that I am an active home tooth whitening fan.  Most lately I have been using Crest Whitestrips (mostly because my GoSmile has run out again and I have a ton of tooth whiteners sitting here mostly unused, and Im being thrifty - its tax time, ya know?).   While I honestly wasn’t that crazy about the Crest Whitestrips at first, they really have grown on me.  They do a great job whitening, and the little gel on plastic really stays on your teeth nicely and doesn’t get in the way.  I think I was a little spoiled by the ease of the GoSmile (put it on, then youre done), and took it out on Crest, to be honest.

crest-whitestrips-tartar So, just when I start to become a big vocal fan, they have come out with something new.  Crest Whitestrips Daily Whitening Plus Tartar Protection.   Yeah!

A couple great sounding things about this product - it is a 5 minute daily commitment, and, obviously, it contains a chemical that prevent tartar from building up on your teeth (pyrophosphate, if you’re interested).

To me, this is a no brainer - a multi use product that will not only whiten your teeth, but will prevent some of the ick that causes your teeth to become less white in the first place.

As of this writing, this is unavailable, but I would keep a close eye on Amazon, Drugstore.com and your local stores, because it is coming soon (this month), and the MRSP is $39.99 and has a 38 day supply.  I have about a weeks worth of regular Whitestrips left, so I am hoping this shows up soon!

I have done it - I have sprayed myself with the first round of the tanner.  It is looking a little streaky at this point, but its coat number one of many that will cover my body for the next 8 months.  I’m getting all excited about spring with my new blue nail polish and a darned groovy pair of shoes I picked up - and its time for some Spring color!

Last year I tried the GlowFusion spray tanner from Fusion Beauty.  The sucker was a little pricey, just under $200 (at Sephora), but I love the cordless air gun.  And the really impressive thing is that it is still working perfectly, after a full season (which is about 8 months for me) of tanning.

I wasn’t so tickled about the solution itself last year, as I didn’t really think it made much of a difference in color on me.  So, this year I decided to start off with it on my super pale skin, and whaddya know - it does have color.  Just the right amount of color, really.  And a neat cocoa scent (I knew that already).  And it dries quickly.  I like it.  I’ll possibly move back to my more dramatic O2 solution later, when I get a better (fake) base tan on, but for now at least, this is perfect.

So, my question is - are you fake tanning this year (I hope if you’re tanning at all its fake tanning!)?  Do you have any current loves in the tanning products arena?

There are two sides to Valentine’s Day - what you want to get as a gift (well thats the part we are concerned about here at eBeautyDaily) and what you want to do to be beautiful for your big Valentines Day date action.  Since we are getting close to the wire, lets talk about gifting for a bit.  I mentioned a few days ago that one of my favorite makeup collections for spring is the L.U.C.I. collection by Lancome.  You just wouldn’t believe how beautiful this is.  ombre-glacee-lancomeOpalescent, iridescent - my favorite, and very romantic.  There are quite a few products in the collection that are absolutely wonderful, but if I were going to pick just two that were my very favorite, and must-have’s, they would be the 2 sided Color Design pencil (LOVE this - one side is opalescent, the other is a super silky black eyeliner) and the  Ombres Glacee (a creamy eyeshadow that can be used elsewhere on the face to highlight) - all of the products in the L.U.C.I. collection have the niftiest “photonic” technology and work together to layer the most beautiful iridescent skin and eyes you have ever seen.  Very different from anything else out right now, and very, very gift worthy.  If you won’t run out and buy this for yourself, do ask a loved one to do it for you, you won’t regret it.

nettiescrub-gift-set Another totally delicious product that any woman would love to receive as a gift (trust me on this!) is NettieScrub.  Nettie is a manicurist and a Texan relocated to California - and she has come out with a wonderful line of body scrubs.  They come in a variety of aromatherapy scents (I love the grapefruit!!), and are chock full of good-for-your-skin oils, and use sugar as the exfoliant.  The packaging on these is precious - these will make an impressive gift for sure.  Try this gift set with bath salts - for an incredibly reasonable $15.  Get them from Nettie’s Etsy site - and hurry!

Beth Bender Beauty has a February/Valentines Day special going on as well.  If/when I get a picture of it, I will put it up, but for now, you have to trust that the gorgeousness that is Beth Bender will carry over to this.  With any $50 order, get a red satin cosmetic pouch with 6 samples of Beth’s spring colors.  Also, with any order comes the new lip color, beth-bender-tallulah Tallulah, a name that is close to my heart.  Tallulah is, in Beth’s words, the perfect shade of pink, and from the looks of the color swatch, I have to agree.  Thanks again to Beth for including her Get In Line Eye Kit for our Splendicity gift bags at Fashion Week.  She is a doll and just the kind of person I love to support, so be sure and check out Beth Bender Beauty all month!
